Making Short Putts

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to spend some time with 1992 US Open champion Tom Kite and to hear his thoughts on short game and putting. When I was playing college golf many years ago, I missed a 4-footer about twice a year. As my aging nerves became more and more frazzled that […]

Short Game Creativity

Everyone has a story about how they got started in this crazy game. Here is mine: I grew up in Upstate New York in a family of very enthusiastic Yankee fans. By the time I was eight I had decided that I would be the next center fielder for the Bronx Bombers as soon as […]

Pause-N-Throw

My student and good friend, Phil Reed, invented the Pause-N-Throw several years ago. I consider it to be a great training device as it promotes the throwing style release used by big hitters and exceptional players. It attaches to your right forearm and loops over your thumb to set your hands in the correct position […]

Creating and Maintaining Speed In Your Golf Swing

OK, let’s see a show of hands: who wants to hit the golf ball further? Well, in surveying the pretend responses it looks like everyone. Much of the speed that we create in the swing is from rotation. From a physics standpoint it’s all about centrifugal force which Webster’s dictionary defines as the apparent force […]

Minimizing Shaft Rotation

The legendary Mike Austin, whose 515-yard drive was the longest in competitive golf history, had a unique but very effective way to describe a square clubface which he demonstrated to me in his front lawn many years ago. We went to the edge of his driveway which he used as the target line. Then he […]

Straight left arm in the golf swing

Many golfers have been taught to keep their left arm straight. Some interpret this to mean a rigid arm that’s almost locked which can restrict your mobility. Do you want a 90-degree angle in the left arm (right-handed golfers)? Of course not, as we need width in the swing. But a soft left arm with […]

Sequencing the golf swing properly for more power and accuracy

Here is a video of Adam Scott and Tiger side by side. In the facing portion notice how the right leg stays motionless. No lateral movement at all. There is a turn of the hips but no sliding. From this position it gets easier to initiate the downswing with the lower body. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyZvEBRkujc

Golf pitching fundamentals

Regarding pitching, the basic fundamentals are to have a slightly open stance, weight predominantly on the left side (for right-handed players) and the ball pretty much between the feet. This causes the shaft to be leaning forward slightly and helps to ensure solid contact. Then we basically just make a mini swing while keeping the […]

How to grip the golf club properly

To place your hands on the club properly, hold the club in front of you at an upward 45- degree angle with your right hand (left for left-handed players) on the shaft slightly below the grip.  Place the left hand on the grip with the heel pad at the base of the little finger on […]

Keeping your golf swing on plane

No less an authority than Jack Nicklaus, as well as my mentors Mike Austin and Dan Shauger, all believed that if the first move in the downswing was to move the weight into the lead foot it is absolutely impossible to release the club too soon. But it’s how we move to the lead foot […]

John is an incredible golf instructor! I had such a great lesson with him–he’s not only knowledgeable but also super encouraging and easy to work with. He broke things down in a way that made sense, and I saw immediate improvements in my swing and confidence.

He used video feedback, provided clear reference materials, and even sent detailed notes after the lesson. I left feeling excited and motivated to keep improving. If you’re looking for a golf coach who’s professional, thorough, and genuinely enjoyable to learn from, John is your guy!

I’ve always been self-taught and gave up the game up for a long time took it back up a couple of years ago. I was able to get my swing back for the most part but then I started to really struggle. I never had a formal lesson in my life until I met John. His knowledge and experience with the golf swing has helped me tremendously to where in a short period of time he had me hitting the ball a lot better than ever. He will definitely get me to where I would like to be as far as the level of my game I’m trying to achieve. He is definitely the teacher that can get that done 100%. I have referred a couple of other gentlemen both at totally different levels of their game and he has helped them as well. If you’re looking for a truly professional teacher look no further John Marshall. He IS the man.

Hi John, Thank you for the feedback. I also greatly appreciate the videos with commentary. Super helpful! I have a few specific things to work on which is what I was hoping to get out of the lesson. Really enjoyed it and appreciate your input. Thanks again.

Hi John. When I came to you for an initial lesson last week I was ready to throw in the towel. I had lost an incredible amount of distance and the accuracy portion of the equation wasn’t much better. Short and crooked is not a fun way to play golf. Within minutes you showed me how to stabilize the clubface from set-up to follow through which had me hitting it exactly where I was aiming. Then you explained how power is created through rotation and not lateral motion. Not only was I hitting some of the longest shots of my life but the swing seemed so effortless and easy on my body. All of a sudden I’m excited about playing golf again. Can’t wait for or next session to keep taking my game to the next level. Thanks SO much.

I’m a brand new beginner to the game, and at 45 I have no idea what the heck I’m doing. John was able to give me clear and concise instructions in an encouraging manner while not overwhelming me. I feel like my fundamentals are already stronger, and most importantly, I was able to go back to the driving range a couple of days later and reproduce the same results I generated in the lesson. I would absolutely recommend John for new golfers or for those looking to improve their game.
